Inland Revenue Service Exam Vacancies 2026

The Public Service Commission has published an official Gazette notification inviting online applications for the Open Competitive Examination for Recruitment to Grade III of the Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service.

The examination is being conducted to recruit suitably qualified candidates to fill 200 vacancies in Grade III of the Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service.

Recruitment will be based on the results of a written competitive examination and a general interview. Candidates who obtain the required minimum marks in all examination papers will be ranked according to the total marks obtained.

Sri Lanka Inland Revenue Service – Grade III

The Public Service Commission will determine the final number of candidates to be appointed and the effective date of appointment. Selection will be made according to merit, subject to the number of available vacancies and satisfaction of all recruitment qualifications.

Salary Scale

Salary will be paid according to the provisions of Public Administration Circular No. 10/2025 dated 25 March 2025.

Nature of Appointment and Service Conditions

  • The appointment is permanent.
  • The position is pensionable.
  • Selected officers must contribute to the applicable Widows’ and Orphans’ or Widowers’ and Orphans’ Pension Scheme.
  • The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of three years.
  • Officers must pass the first efficiency bar examination within three years of recruitment.
  • Officers must acquire the required official language proficiency within three years of joining the service.
  • Selected candidates must be willing and fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.

General Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must satisfy all the following general requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • Must be of excellent moral character.
  • Must be physically and mentally fit to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.
  • Must not be a person holding the position of a priest in any religious denomination.
  • Must not have appeared for the relevant open competitive examination more than two times.
  • Must possess all required qualifications on or before the application closing date.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

Applicants must possess at least one of the following educational or professional qualifications:

Degree Qualification – Option 01

A degree with a First Class or Second Class awarded by a recognized foreign university or a state university recognized by the University Grants Commission.

Degree Qualification – Option 02

A degree with a First Class or Second Class awarded by a university established under an Act of Parliament in Sri Lanka.

Recognized Degree – Option 03

A First Class or Second Class degree recognized under Section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. The minimum study period of the degree must be at least three years.

Professional Qualification – Option 04

Must be an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

Professional Qualification – Option 05

Must be a Chartered Accountant.

Important: The relevant degree or professional qualification must be effective on or before the application closing date of 31 August 2026.

For ordinary applicants, eligibility based on date of birth will be determined as follows:

  • The applicant must have been born on or before 31 August 2004.

Applicants serving in the Public Service or Provincial Public Service may be eligible up to 35 years of age, subject to the conditions stated in the official Gazette.

Recruitment and Selection Process

Candidates must obtain the minimum required mark in each written examination paper. Eligible candidates will then be ranked according to the total marks obtained in all papers.

Candidates with the highest marks may be called for the general interview according to the number of vacancies and the decision of the Public Service Commission.

Pass Requirement: Applicants must obtain at least 40 marks in each of the three examination papers. Candidates who fail to obtain 40 marks in any one paper will not qualify.

Paper 01 – Comprehension

This paper will assess the candidate’s ability to understand information and communicate effectively.

Examination Medium

The examination will be conducted in the following three language media:

  • Applicants may select only one examination medium.
  • All three question papers must be answered in the same selected language medium.
  • The examination medium cannot be changed after the application has been submitted.
  • Every applicant must sit for all three examination papers.

General Interview

Candidates who qualify according to the written examination results may be called for a general interview.

The interview will be conducted to:

  • Verify educational and professional qualifications.
  • Verify age and citizenship.
  • Check original certificates and supporting documents.
  • Examine physical fitness for appointment.
No marks will be awarded for the general interview. Being invited to the interview does not automatically guarantee an appointment.

Payment Warning: Applicants must pay the full examination fee correctly. Applications with insufficient or excess payments may be rejected. The fee will not be refunded or transferred to another examination.

  • A letter confirming their service.

Examination Admission Card

Examination admission cards will be issued online by the Commissioner General of Examinations to applicants who submit properly completed applications before the closing date.

The Department of Examinations may inform candidates about the release of admission cards through:

  • An official website notice.
  • SMS notification.
  • Email notification.

Applicants should carefully check the details on the admission card. Any required corrections should be requested from the Department of Examinations before the examination date.

Accepted Identity Documents

Candidates must prove their identity at the examination hall using one of the following valid documents:

  • National Identity Card.
  • Valid passport.
  • Valid Sri Lankan driving licence.

Candidates must enter the examination hall without covering their face and ears so that their identity can be verified and the absence of electronic communication devices can be confirmed.

Examination Results

A merit list will be prepared according to the total marks obtained by candidates who achieve the minimum pass mark in every examination paper.

Examination results may be individually communicated to candidates or published through the official Department of Examinations results website.
