Examination Details

About the Examination

The Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka has issued the Gazette notification for the Buddhist Dharmacharya Certificate Examination 2026. According to the official notice, the examination is scheduled to be conducted in November 2026.

The examination will be conducted in Sinhala and English. Applicants can select only one language medium when submitting the application.

Eligibility Qualifications

Applicants must have completed at least one of the following qualifications:

• Passed the Dhamma School Final Certificate Examination.
• Passed the Pracheena Preliminary Examination.
• Passed the Piriven Final Examination.
• Passed six subjects at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination, including Buddhism with a Credit Pass.

How to Apply

Applications and instructions are available through the relevant Dhamma Schools and the Department of Examinations.

Eligible applicants who meet the required qualifications may apply through a Dhamma School near their residence, according to the instructions provided in the official Gazette.

Completed applications should be submitted through the relevant procedure before the closing date.

Examination Fee

The fee for completing a deficient pass subject is Rs. 50.

The Buddhist Dharmacharya Certificate Examination consists of five main subject areas. The syllabus includes:

• Fundamental Teachings of Theravada Buddhism
• Buddhist Vinaya and Pali Language
• Sutta Dhamma
• Pali and Dhammapada
• Pali and Jataka Stories
• Abhidhamma
• Buddhist History and Culture
• Buddhist Social Philosophy
